Silent Scientology Birth May Not Be Exactly What You Think.

Kelly Preston and John Travolta's new little boy just arrived on the scene. Normally I wouldn't comment, (celebrities are boring - real life is much more fun) BUT there's been a slew of interest in this couple's silent birth agenda, which is worth a comment or two. The couple practices Scientology, which encourages silent birth - actually this also made the news when Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, also into Scientology, had their little girl back in 2006. Does silent birth sound wacky to you? It does a bit right? However, the Church of Scientology International just released a press statement that makes it sound a little less nuts. Their press release notes:
Silent birth is all about providing the best possible environment for the birthing mother and her new baby. Its origins can be found in L. Ron Hubbard’s Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and are firmly rooted in a fundamental and abiding principle that women, particularly expectant mothers, be given the utmost in care and respect. A silent birth is labor and delivery done in a calm and loving environment and with no spoken words by anyone attending. Chatty doctors and nurses, shouts to “PUSH, PUSH” and loud or laughing remarks to “encourage” are the types of things that are meant to be avoided. They go on to say, "The point of silent birth is NO WORDS. It does not mean a mother cannot make any sound during childbirth. It is doubtful that any woman could give birth without making any noise at all." Well then. That makes a lot more sense. People in the labor and birth room can be hyper annoying. Even your own partner can be obnoxious. That's the main reason I suggest a doula - to keep those annoying people in check. Hmmm... for once, Scientology has managed to sound almost logical. I guess there's a first time for everything. What do you think of the silent birth idea?
