Relaxing during pregnancy may benefit your future female offspring. According to new research from the University of Minnesota Medical School's Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology, when a mother experienced stress during her pregnancy, it resulted in larger female offspring and those offspring had abnormally high blood sugar levels, a typical symptom of being overweight or obese.
The researchers estimate that stress may change how a specific brain neurotransmitter behaves, which in turn stimulates appetite and induce fat cell growth. Researchers aren't sure why pregnancy stress may affect female offspring but not males. Study researchers note that interventions during pregnancy may help decrease the incidents of obesity. I'm inclined to think that eating healthy foods and getting up off the couch will help keep more kids healthy in the long run, than being relaxed during pregnancy will, but hey every little bit helps during this insane obesity epidemic right?
