YOU should be the best, most healthy woman you can be, for yourself first. Women who are overweight are more prone to heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure plus more likely to develop cancers of the breast, endometrium (the lining of the uterus), colon, kidney and esophagus. Weighing too much also puts you at risk for sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and gallbladder disease. 2. Being overweight makes conception harder: While it's not always the case, most research shows that being overweight can decrease fertility and make it harder than normal to conceive. 3. Being overweight is hard on your pregnancy and baby-to-be: Eating too much or being overweight or obese while pregnant results in a slew of possible complication risks. You'll have a higher risk of complications such as gestational diabetes, stroke, hypertension and preeclampsia. Your baby may be at risk for a lower IQ and stillbirth. 4. Being overweight makes childbirth more difficult: Labor and childbirth is hard for most women, even if you're in tip-top shape. Being overweight can make the process that much more difficult. If you weigh too much you'll be more at risk for induction of labor, cesarean delivery, and postpartum hemorrhage. 5. Being overweight while pregnant may result in an overweight child: Research shows that 1/3 of babies are obese by 9 months of age and your weight while pregnant may have something to do with this. The healthier your pregnancy, the less likely it is that your child will be overweight. On top of this, your unhealthy habits are quickly picked up by your child, so it's important to eat healthy and exercise in order to set a good example.
