Although many people assume that fertility issues are mainly female related, past research shows that about half of all fertility problems for couples can be linked back to problems related to sperm quality and quantity. Not all sperm problems are fixable. However, men can maximize their chances of having better, more fertile sperm with some easy actions. Action 1 - Quit smoking. Smoking is bad for everyone, even itty bitty sperm. Smoking causes cell damage. Dead cells in turn, can lower sperm counts and make existing sperm less vital. Along the same lines, too much alcohol or street drugs can also impair sperm quality and quantity. Action 2 - Eat healthy and exercise. According to some studies, being overweight can significantly lower a fella's sperm count. Good nutrition is more than just being trim though. Healthier sperm is made, not surprisingly, by men who eat healthy nutrients. According to past studies, men should particularly focus on eating foods with vitamin C, zinc, folic acid and vitamin E for healthy sperm. Action 3 - Limit cell phone use. Cell phone research is a newer deal, but some early results show that excessive cell phone use may lower sperm quality. Action 4 - Avoid BPA when possible. BPA exposure has been linked to lower than normal sperm counts. You can easily avoid canned foods and plastic dishes in order to avoid quite a bit of BPA. * Bonus fun action - drink more coffee. Oh, you lucky men! As always, talk to your doctor for the best advice if you're having trouble becoming pregnant and you suspect it's a sperm issue.
