Nicole Kidman &Keith Urban - Parents Through Gestational Surrogacy. What Do You Know About Surrogacy?

Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban - parents through gestational surrogacy. What do you know about surrogacy?
In "shocking celebrity news," the world has learned that Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban became parents again, this time through a gestational surrogate. The couple was able to keep quite the secret, as nobody seemed to know about anything - the plans, the surrogate or the baby! Faith Margaret Kidman Urban was born on December 28th in Nashville. She was carried by a gestational surrogate and is biologically both Nicole Kidman's and Keith Urban's child. People printed a statement from the family. In part, it said,

"No words can adequately convey the incredible gratitude that we feel for everyone who was so supportive throughout this process, in particular our gestational carrier."

People have been using surrogates to become parents for over thirty years. The first known case of surrogacy in the United States occurred in the late 1970's. Since then, the technology and options have changed drastically, as has the laws governing surrogacy in some states. I've always found the topic very interesting. I did a long and involved research project for my bioethics class when I was in law school on surrogacy. Since then, things have changed a lot. (Wow, that makes me feel old!) This week, I will share a post about Americans taking surrogacy overseas -- using surrogates in other countries, India in particular, because the expense is lower. That presents a lot of ethical issues, in my opinion. For now, if you want to read something interesting, check out this story of "Britain's most prolific surrogate." The article is from 2007, but at that time, she was acting as a surrogate for the ninth time! She was pregnant with triplets. Interestingly enough, that pregnancy was her first that resulted from IVF. The previous pregnancies resulted from using the intended fathers' sperm and her own eggs. Even crazier, one pregnancy that she thought resulted from the intended father's sperm was anything but that. She and her partner had inadvertantly become pregnant. She still proceeded with "placing" the baby with the couple who had hired her to act as a surrogate. Check back later this week for a discussion about using surrogates from foreign countries. For now, here's a short video about Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, if you're into celebrity news!
