Trendspotting with Jill Laine: The perfect peplum

Hello SK Style Watchers! What’s been around for over a century but is fresh, flirty, feminine and oh, so right now? It’s the peplum! The official definition of a peplum is a short, flared, gathered or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s jacket, dress, skirt or blouse. This extra fabric really emphasizes the waist, hips and female shape. Peplums have re-emerged yet again on the runways and red carpets, which is why it’s my pick as favorite trend of the week!

Why you should be wearing one

Hello SK Style Watchers! What’s been around for over a century but is fresh, flirty, feminine and oh, so right now? It’s the peplum! The official definition of a peplum is a short, flared, gathered or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman’s jacket, dress, skirt or blouse. This extra fabric really emphasizes the waist, hips and female shape. Peplums have re-emerged yet again on the runways and red carpets, which is why it’s my pick as favorite trend of the week!

Today I’m going to tell you three reasons why you should be wearing a peplum.

Our pick: Peplum Skirt, (AngelaJohnsonDesigns.com, $165)

Skirt

First and foremost, a peplum is designed to show off a tiny little waist and give extra oomph to the hips, exaggerating the female shape or figure but in a classy and demure way. Peplums are great for many body types; they help add a little extra shape if you‘re skinny or straight, yet still look fabulous on curvy gals too. However, if you’re carrying extra weight in your waist, peplums are not a good choice since they’ll just focus on what you want to disguise.

Our pick: Peplum Blouse, (Anthropologie, $68)

Blouse

Next, a peplum can be worn in many ways and for many occasions, expanding the options in your wardrobe. Peplums in a dress or skirt can be worn to the office, as well as peplum tops worn with trousers. Skirts and dresses with peplums are flirty and show off your female figure, so they‘re an obvious choice for date night. Peplums in a top or jacket offer even more options and can be worn to the office or dressed down on the weekends.

Our pick: Nanette Lepore Peplum Dress, (Nordstrom, $298)

Dress

Lastly, peplums are right on trend, yet classic too. You know how there are trends that come but then go with a big thud? At this point in fashion’s history, peplums have been around long enough to be a classic. Like I mentioned earlier, predecessors of the peplum started in the late 19th century, though the peplum as we know it came into style in the 1940s. It re-emerges every so often. So, if it speaks to you, there is no better time than now to add a flirty, fun and feminine peplum to your style!
