As Lady Gaga opened the show with an electrifying performance and duet with Sir Elton John, the Grammy Awards themselves proved to be completely overshadowed by the performances of the ladies. Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Pink achieved Grammy Award night highlights while also taking home their share of Grammy Awards hardware.
Beyonce clearly shined as she demonstrated her incredible range from her own hits like If I Were a Boy to her mid-song channeling of Alanis Morissette’s You Oughta Know.
Not to be outdone, Pink then performed a Cirque du Soleil like feat hanging upside down in midair, spraying water onto the crowd as her costume literally disappeared into thin air.
Taylor Swift admitted it was an honor to share the stage with Stevie Nicks and although she later indicated in her acceptance speech for album of the year that this is the moment she’ll tell the grandkids about someday when she’s 80, her duet with Nicks was sure one she won’t soon forget.
Let’s not forget some men in the biz performed as well as Jamie Foxx took the stage in a Civil War-like costume. Bon Jovi also performed a few hit songs like Who Says You Can’t Go Home? and for the first time in Grammy history, the audience voted online for the Jersey boys’ third song of the night — as for the winning tune? It was Livin’ on a Prayer.
The Black Eyed Peas rocked it with their live version of I Gotta Feeling in their futuristic costumes that showed why the song was one of the biggest hits of 2009.
Of course, it wouldn’t have been the music industry’s greatest night of the year without a tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. As Lionel Richie introduced MJ and advised audience members to wear their 3-D glasses, a first in the history of the awards show, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Carrie Underwood and let’s not forget the legendary Smokey Robinson. As we heard Michael’s children, Prince and Paris, say a few words it was no doubt the most touching moment of the evening.
