Special treats any kid will love

Kids love treats — especially snacks they can help make with just a few ingredients. Sometimes, the best treats are inventive variations of their favorites, or new combinations of foods they already love. Get creative with these fun snacks and treats!

1Frozen chocolate bananas

A serving of fruit with a little chocolate goes together easily. Peel bananas, slice in half and insert skewers/sticks; press halves back together. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap and place in the freezer until firm, about three hours. Melt chocolate (candy, candy bars, chips or bars) in the microwave, and dip the frozen bananas to coat. Allow chocolate to firm slightly and refreeze for an additional 30 minutes, or roll in extra toppings such as chopped nuts, coconut, crumbles of cereal or graham cracker crumbs before refreezing.

2Kid-licious trail mix

Combine 1 cup cereal (honey nut, plain, apple cinnamon or any favorite) with 1 cup small cheese crackers and 1 cup dried fruit. Add in 1 cup cashews or other nuts (be aware of children’s potential allergy to peanuts) and 1 cup miniature chocolate candy. Toss in mini pretzel sticks/twists, peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips. Store the trail mix in an airtight container. A small bag of this treat makes a great grab-and-go snack.

3Stovetop s’mores

Coat a skillet with vegetable oil spray. Over medium heat, layer a flour tortilla with marshmallow halves and chocolate chips. Sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar mix and fold over, warming both sides. Heat until the chocolate and marshmallows start to melt.

4Candy snowballs

This three-ingredient treat is easy for kids to make with minimal help. You’ll need four cups Kix cereal, 12 ounces white chocolate chips, and 1/3 cup granular Splenda. Melt the chocolate chips in the microwave and stir in the cereal until completely coated. Add the Splenda and stir again. Drop by tablespoons onto a cookie sheet or waxed paper. Place in the freezer for 15 minutes, or in the refrigerator for half an hour. Refrigerate leftover snowballs.

5Frozen Treats

Let the kids crush some peppermint candies as topping for vanilla or chocolate frozen yogurt, or blend a scoop with fresh fruit and a little milk for a fruity shake. A scoop in your blender with just a drizzle of milk will yield a soft-serve consistency to load into a waffle cone.
