If you’ve ever dreamed of winning the gold, silver or bronze medals, but can’t be in London to compete in this year’s Summer Olympic Games, why not craft a few faux medals to celebrate your own medal-worthy accomplishments? This project comes together easily and also makes a cute garland to decorate for a game-themed party when strung together, end to end.
Tackle this project as a mother-daughter duo to bond before the Summer Olympic Games.
Supplies to make one faux medal:
- 1, 8.5-inch by 11-inch sheet of glitter cardstock (in gold, silver or bronze)
- 2, 8.5-inch by 11-inch sheets of coordinating cardstock
- 1 yard of purple ribbon
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Printer or black marker
- Wide-mouthed canning jar
Step 1:
Cut out two 2-inch by 11-inch strips of paper from the solid cardstock. Carefully fan-fold the strips with 1/3-inch folds, using care that your folds are crisp. A bone folder, available at most craft stores, will help with this.
Step 2:
Use your hot glue gun to glue the ends of your strips together, creating one long strip that measures approximately 2 inches by 21 inches. Next, glue the free ends together to create a fan-folded loop, as shown.
Step 3:
Out of your leftover cardstock, cut out two circles roughly the size of a quarter. Lay your paper loop on a flat surface and carefully push the top edges into the center, creating a flat disk. Use care so that you don’t rip your paper. Glue a disk in the center of each side to hold the circular fan flat and in place.
Step 4:
Use the top edge of your wide-mouthed canning jar to trace a circle onto the wrong side of your glitter cardstock. Cut out the circle. Fold the ribbon in half, as shown, and glue onto the back of the circle.
Step 5:
Glue the glitter circle onto the top/center of the fan-folded disk.
Step 6:
Print and cut out your desired message. Carefully glue to the front of your medal. The font shown is Needlework Good in 48 point and is available for free download.
